Potential tropical cyclone in Tonga, moving near Niuafo‘ou

A tropical depression near Tonga is likely to develop into a cyclone by Monday.

However, the Fua’amotu Meteorological Services said the possibility is low to moderate in the next 24 hours.

The warning came after category one cyclone Neil was cancelled for Tonga this morning.

Met said tropical depression td08f was located near latitude 14.8 south, 178.7 east or 342km west northwest of Niuafo’ou and 544km west northwest of Niuatoputapu at 05:00pm this afternoon.

This system is moving southeast at the speed of 14 knots (26km/hr).

Associated clouds, heavy rain and gale force winds is expected to affect the group, it said.

Met said, a gale warning remains in force for the Niuas, Vava’u and Ha’apai land areas and coastal waters.

A strong wind remains in force for Tongatapu, ‘Eua, Tele-Ki-Tonga and Tele-Ki-Tokelau land areas and coastal waters.

A heavy rain and flash flooding advisory remains in force for the Niuas and is now in force for  Vava’u and Ha’apai.

A heavy damaging swell warning remains in force for all of Tonga coastal waters.
