Another earthquake hits Mexico City

By Max Jaeger, New York Post

Mexico was rocked by a second massive earthquake in as many weeks Tuesday — on the anniversary of a 1985 quake that killed thousands.

Tuesday’s magnitude 7.1 quake was centered about 70 miles southeast of the capital Mexico City, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Many fled from office buildings along the central Reforma Avenue as structures there swayed “sickeningly” and objects were rattled off desks and walls, the Associated Press reported.

Former Mexican ambassador Jorge Guajardo tweeted video of the city after the quake, showing smoke or dust rising from several buildings.

The extent of injuries was not immediately clear, but the upheaval comes less than two weeks after an 8.2 temblor wreaked havoc on southern Mexico, killing at least 51 people there.

Tuesday also marks 32 years since one of the country’s largest-ever quakes rocked the area, killing thousands and devastating the city. Buildings across the city held preparation drills earlier in the day to mark the anniversary.
