Strong winds knock down trees as flood threat loom at low lying areas in Nukuʻalofa

Heavy rain and strong winds brought down a tree in Nukuʻalofa in front of the Tanoa International hotel this afternoon.

Tongatapu locals began feeling the full force of the winds and flood threats were spotted at low lying areas such as Apifoʻou College in Maʻufanga, our correspondent in Nukuʻalofa has said.

Tonga Met Service said at 1.45pm today Tuesday 23 a gale warning remains in force for Ha’apai, Tongatapu and ʻEua land areas.

A strong wind warning remains in force for Niua and Vavaʻu land areas.

A heavy rain warning and flash flood advisory remain in force for all of Tonga.

It said a shallow low pressure system is currently approaching the group from the west and it is expected to move across the group tonight.

Meanwhile an active trough of low pressure lies slow moving across the group.

Associated clouds , rain and strong to gale force winds may affect the group.
