Search ends for fishermen missing off Tonga reef

A search that scoured more than 50-square kilometres of the area surrounding Hakaufasi Reef in Vava’u  with boats and aeroplane looking for three Vava’u fishermen has been called off.  

Six men went diving for lobsters on May 29 in the Hakaufasi Reef but three of them returned and raised the alarm with police reporting the other three failed to return to their boat.

Bad weather and rough seas were factors in the tragedy.  

According to Vava'u police victims' nexts of kins have been informed and the fishermen are Fangupo Fifita (42) and Fe'iloaki 'Ahio (44) of Mataika, and Pauli Malimali (32) of Talihau.
