Through KiwiBuild, we will build 100,000 affordable homes

Is that it?

The budget delivered nothing for hardworking Kiwis. It was one for John Key’s mates, not your mates.

Aspiring first home buyers in particular will be bitterly disappointed. Bill English ramped up expectations that he would make housing more affordable.

But that’s not what he delivered.

National’s plan to free up land won’t cut it because it’s inevitable developers will build more expensive homes on it rather than affordable starter houses.

To make matters worse the Government’s accord with Auckland is already falling apart because National believes it can ride over any Council that disagrees with them.

The only way to help first home buyers is to roll up your sleeves and build affordable houses. That’s what Labour will do.

Through KiwiBuild, we will build 100,000 affordable homes. We will also bring in a capital gains tax to discourage property speculators who are making a killing and driving up house prices.

We will require landlords to ensure all rental properties are warm and dry. Every New Zealander deserves to live in a healthy home.

National’s possible trial of a Warrant of Fitness on State houses is a joke. We don’t need a pilot programme to tell us that homes should be warm and dry. It’s common sense.

Average growth of 2.5 per cent, unemployment of over 5 per cent and a few scraps that fail to address growing poverty are all underwhelming.

As I said in my speech yesterday, it won’t do anything to help New Zealanders.

About The Author

Sometimes when a business is growing, it needs a little help.

Right now Kaniva News provides a free, politically independent, bilingual news service for readers around the world that is absolutely unique. We are the largest New Zealand-based Tongan news service, and our stories reach Tongans  wherever they are round the world. But as we grow, there are increased demands on Kaniva News for translation into Tongan on our social media accounts and for the costs associated with expansion. We believe it is important for Tongans to have their own voice and for Tongans to preserve their language, customs and heritage. That is something to which we are strongly committed. That’s why we are asking you to consider sponsoring our work and helping to preserve a uniquely Tongan point of view for our readers and listeners.
