Strong Earthquake shakes Tonga

A 7.4 magnitude earthquake was reported to have jolted the Island of Tonga at 6:19am this morning.

According to USGS the quake hit deep south of Fiji approximately 250 km south of Nuku’alofa

No tsunami alert or damages issued following the quake but it has caused GeoNet’s system to falsely identify two strong earthquakes.

The GeoNet website reported a magnitude 6.1 and a 5.9 earthquake about 5.25am off the East Coast, but these have since been deleted.
