Tongan Hailed as Heroine After Drowning Rescue

Tongan Amohia Afeaki and her friend Sabrina Parsons are being hailed as heroines after saving the lives of two men at the Northland beach.

The two 15 year friends reached out to the rescue of these two distress men after calling for help hailed them from a rip of a Northland beach.

Arriving  in their boogie boards they found one of the men to be seriously in trouble.

“When I got him on my board, his eyes were rolled back and he wasn’t responding,” Sabrina  told  Northern Advocade.

She said that  “I shouted at him to listen and to breathe in for two seconds and out for two seconds.

“That got him breathing regularly but then he started panicking again. He was so panicked he kept rolling the board and going under.”

Another man swam to help them in which they were all eventually taken ashore where ambulance together with police had arrived.

“Nine people, including the girls and two rescuers who had swallowed a lot of water, were taken to Bay of Islands Hospital by chopper and by road. All have since been discharged.

“We were perfectly fine but they wanted to take us to hospital to check us too,” Amohia said.

Amohia is from Mangere Bridge and Sabrina is from Onehunga,  Auckland.
